Artist Statement:
I have always been attracted to the natural world, in particular the areas of ecology and aquatic resources, and it is from this interest that most of my work stems. Within my current art studies there is a continuing discourse about the value of traditional forms of art versus conceptual and abstract work. It is my goal to work with imagery I am drawn to but to use that imagery in a way that continues to make people think and instill value in practices that are traditional. New innovations in art are what keeps me motivated and interested but I also think that in creating and understanding works of art value must be placed on traditional methods and practices. I am often drawn towards landscape or individual aspects of the landscape, that seem to encapsulate how I view the world around me. As a result, my work focuses on a particular place or aspect of a place whether it be the landscape of a place I have been or a series of plants that remind me of a particular place and time. I chose to work in traditional ways, such as relief woodcuts where I can become familiar with the material and immersed in the images I create.
